A Day in The Life of A Facilities Manager: Behind the Scenes of Keeping Businesses Running

When everything in a commercial building works exactly as it should, it’s easy to overlook the people making it happen.

Lighting works. Heating operates efficiently. Water systems perform as expected. Contractors arrive when scheduled. Compliance inspections are completed. Planned maintenance prevents unexpected failures.

Behind all of this is an experienced Facilities Manager.

At Maidenhead Electrical Ltd (mel), our Facilities Management team works with organisations across finance, education, utilities, hospitality, manufacturing and commercial property, helping clients maintain safe, compliant and efficient working environments.

To give an insight into what the role really involves, we spoke to Billy-Reece Potter, one of MEL’s Facilities Managers based at Glencore’s Maidenhead offices.

What Does a Facilities Manager Actually Do?

Facilities Management is about much more than arranging repairs.

A Facilities Manager coordinates the people, systems and maintenance that keep a business operating safely and efficiently. From managing contractors and compliance schedules to responding quickly when unexpected issues arise, it’s a role that combines technical knowledge, organisation and communication.

At mel, Facilities Managers act as the link between clients and the engineering expertise behind our electrical, mechanical and building maintenance services.

Every day is different.

Meet Billy-Reece Potter

Billy joined mel after building experience within both construction and Facilities Management.

“I previously worked as a Facilities Manager for a private school in London. Before that, I worked at Eton College for four years on the tools, mainly in glazing and wet trades, helping wherever needed.”

After leaving school, Billy initially studied IT at Reading College before naturally gravitating towards construction.

“My dad was a self-employed plasterer, so I grew up around the trade.”

Starting as a labourer at Eton College allowed Billy to learn from experienced tradespeople before progressing into Facilities Management.

“Taking that next step taught me a huge amount about Health & Safety, compliance and managing buildings rather than simply working on them.”

Supporting a Complex Commercial Estate

Today, Billy works as Facilities Manager at Glencore’s Maidenhead offices.

His role combines reactive maintenance with long-term planning to ensure the building continues operating efficiently.

“A typical day includes reactive maintenance, organising service contracts, daily checks and supporting the Office and Finance Manager.”

“Every day is different because Facilities Management covers such a wide range of responsibilities.”

Although Billy is based on-site, he knows specialist engineering support is always available.

“The team at MEL are always there to help me solve problems whenever I need the wider experience of the business.”

Planning Ahead Rather Than Reacting

One of the most rewarding aspects of Billy’s role has been helping establish Glencore’s new Maidenhead facility.

Rather than simply responding to maintenance issues, he has helped develop the long-term systems that keep the building running efficiently.

“Getting all the service and maintenance contracts in place has been one of the most satisfying projects.”

“It’s about building relationships with trusted contractors and making sure we’re prepared before problems arise.”

He has also been responsible for creating servicing schedules and developing the site’s compliance register.

These behind-the-scenes processes reduce risk, improve efficiency and help ensure the building continues operating smoothly as occupancy grows.

The Skills That Make a Great Facilities Manager

Technical knowledge is important, but Billy believes personal qualities are just as valuable.

“One of the biggest skills is staying calm under pressure.”

“When electrical or plumbing issues happen, you need to react quickly, but always safely.”

Communication is equally important.

As someone representing both MEL and Glencore, Billy regularly works with employees, contractors and visitors from around the world.

“Being approachable, organised and professional makes a huge difference.”

Looking Towards the Future

Facilities Management offers significant opportunities for career development.

Billy is keen to continue expanding both his technical and leadership experience.

“I’d like to keep learning and eventually move into a senior project management role or something similar.”

It’s an ambition supported by MEL’s commitment to investing in its people and encouraging professional development.

Life Outside Work

Outside work, Billy enjoys travelling, exploring London, discovering new restaurants and planning city breaks.

His advice for maintaining a healthy work-life balance is refreshingly simple.

“Stay reasonably fit, stay hydrated and take a proper homemade lunch whenever you can.”
