At mel Group, that responsibility often sits with our Contracts Managers.

We recently sat down with Dan Cain, one of our Contracts Managers, to learn more about the role and why effective contract management is such an important part of successful project delivery.

Contracts Managers play a vital role in ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with client expectations.

Their responsibilities often include:

• Supporting Project Managers and engineering teams
• Coordinating labour and resources
• Liaising with clients and stakeholders
• Conducting site visits and progress reviews
• Managing subcontractors and specialist contractors
• Monitoring quality, safety, and compliance
• Ensuring projects are delivered on time and to specification

In short, they help keep projects moving while providing clients with a clear point of contact throughout the delivery process.

For Dan, the day starts early.

“My alarm goes off at 5:15am. I get up, shower, have breakfast – cereal – and head into the office. I usually arrive around 6:15. We catch up as a team, and at 7:00, the engineers arrive.”

The morning briefing plays an important role in ensuring every engineer understands their responsibilities and arrives on site fully prepared.

“We go through their planned jobs for the day and make sure everyone is clear before they head to site. We normally pair an electrician with an apprentice so they can travel together.”

While every day is different, strong planning and communication remain at the heart of effective contract management.

One of the key responsibilities of a Contracts Manager is coordinating multiple moving parts across live projects and operational environments.

At mel Group, this includes managing works across large and complex estates, including our long-standing work with Eton College.

“Now that we manage both electrical and mechanical responsibilities at Eton, we oversee subcontractors and support our full-time plumbing and heating engineers. We plan, schedule, and ensure the work progresses smoothly.”

From refurbishment projects and infrastructure upgrades to ongoing maintenance programmes, Contracts Managers help ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and with minimal disruption to building users.

Successful project delivery is about much more than completing work on site.

“I’ve only been here a year, and the growth has been huge. The variety of work means we’re always learning.”
