Stuart served in the Royal Marines for ten years after leaving school, where he developed many of the practical DIY and woodworking skills that have remained with him throughout his life. Following his military career, he retrained as a lawyer specialising in pharmaceutical research. After being made redundant, he moved into education, teaching woodwork, woodturning and calligraphy to prisoners within the prison service.
Outside of work, Stuart has a keen interest in carpentry and DIY, as well as traditional calligraphy, pyrography (woodburning) and woodturning.
